Herpetology

From frogs and salamanders to snakes and turtles, there’s a whole world of reptiles and amphibians to dive into with the Herpetology collections at the Royal BC Museum.

They might be small, but reptiles and amphibians play an important part in British Columbia’s ecosystem. We collect and study them to learn more about their environments and how to protect them. Some specimens in the provincial collection date back as far as 1834.

Why This Work Matters

Reptiles and amphibians are incredibly sensitive to changes in their surroundings. If their numbers start to dwindle, it can be a warning sign that something is wrong environmentally. By watching where these animals live and monitoring them regularly, we can spot problems early and help protect their habitats.

Helping Science and Conservation

The provincial collection helps scientists and conservation groups make decisions about how to care for BC’s wildlife. We keep track of which species are at risk and how their numbers are changing. This research also helps us understand how climate change and habitat loss affect them.

Growing the Collection

We have more than 8,000 preserved reptiles and amphibians in our collection, most from BC. Each one has important details about where and when it was found. We add new specimens through research trips and donations from others who help us study these animals.

Learning and Outreach

We help people of all ages discover the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians through the museum’s core galleries, school programs, and online tools.
