Palaeontology

Palaeontology is the study of the history of life on Earth—including dinosaurs, marine reptiles, and fossil plants

At the Royal BC Museum, the Palaeontology collection works to discover, protect, and study the fossil record of British Columbia. Each fossil gives us a window into the distant past and helps us understand how life has changed over millions of years.

Why This Work Matters

Fossils help us piece together Earth’s history. They show how animals and environments have evolved over time and how changes like shifting climates or continents have shaped life. This knowledge doesn’t just teach us about the past—it helps us make sense of present-day changes in biodiversity and ecosystems.

Helping Science and Conservation

Our research helps scientists around the world learn more about prehistoric life in BC. We identify new species, map out ancient ecosystems, and track how different animals adapted to their environments. This work contributes to science, education, and helps protect important fossil sites from damage or loss.

Growing the Collection

The museum’s fossil collection holds more than 100,000 specimens, including dinosaur bones, marine fossils, plant imprints, and ancient footprints. Most fossils come from BC’s rocks, cliffs, and riverbeds and are carefully preserved with detailed notes about where and when they were found. We add new fossils every year through fieldwork, research projects, and public contributions.

Learning and Outreach

We believe fossils should inspire everyone. That’s why we share our discoveries through museum exhibits, public talks, classroom programs, and online resources. Our staff work closely with schools and communities, helping students and researchers learn more about palaeontology.

Get Involved

Fossils can be found in unexpected places! If you come across something unusual, let us know. We welcome reports, photos, and fossil donations—especially with good location information. You can also take part in citizen science, volunteer, or support fossil protection efforts. Together, we can help preserve BC’s prehistoric past for future generations.
